Description

This CPD short course aims to analyse critically the history and current context of mentoring and coaching in schools and colleges with particular reference to beginning and early career teachers.

The course reflects critically on the nature and role of mentor and coach through undertaking small school based tasks.

 

Detailed Description

 

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this course, successful students will have:

  • Developed a conceptual understanding of different theoretical frameworks for individual / whole school context coaching and mentoring,
  • Critically analysed and reflected on the development of coaching and mentoring as it applies to professional learning in a school context in initial teacher education and the induction period,
  • A systematic and detailed understanding of the role of mentor and coach and the knowledge, skills and understanding required to undertake the roles in the context of current initiatives,
  • An understanding of the concept of “self” and the characteristics of the adult learner with reference to self-directed learning,
  • The ability to apply in the school context the process skills of mentoring and coaching.
